The Comment-to-DM Funnel
A free guide by Kamran Imam — Instagram · TikTok · YouTube
“Comment PROMPTS and I’ll send it to you” isn’t a gimmick — it’s the single most effective growth mechanic in short-form right now, because it converts viewers into two things at once: a comment (which the algorithm reads as strong engagement and shows the video to more people) and a DM conversation (which you own). Here’s the full setup. Free, no signup, ever.
The machine has four parts
1. The asset. A guide page, PDF, or prompt pack — bigger than the video. This rule is everything: the video shows 5 prompts, the DM delivers 25. If the DM just repeats the video, people feel baited and never comment again. (Every guide on this site is built to be a DM asset — that’s the point of the /r/ pages.)
2. The keyword. One word, easy to spell, on-theme with the video: “PROMPTS”, “SETUP”, “AUDIT”. Unique per video (so you know what’s working) and never a word people would comment naturally (“yes”, “info”) — that triggers accidental deliveries.
3. The automation. ManyChat is the standard (free tier starts fine); Instagram also has native keyword auto-replies for simple cases. The flow: trigger on the keyword as a comment on the specific post → optionally reply to the comment publicly (“sent!” — this stacks social proof and more comments) → DM the link.
4. The delivery message. Don’t just fire a naked link — links from accounts people don’t follow can land with friction. The pattern that works:
Hey! Here's the [thing] from the video: [link] — the page has the full [expanded version]. If it's useful, a follow means I keep making these. One value line, one link, one soft ask. No sequence of five follow-up messages — that’s how you teach people to never comment again.
Platform reality check
This mechanic is Instagram-native. On TikTok, comment automation is unreliable — run the same videos with “link in bio” plus a pinned comment, and lean harder on caption SEO (/r/captions, block 3). Same content, different delivery.
The compounding loop most people miss
Each keyword’s comment count is market research. When “AUDIT” gets 400 comments and “SETUP” gets 40, your audience just told you what your next five videos — and maybe your next product — should be. Track keyword → comments → link clicks in a simple sheet, monthly.
Setup order for a beginner
Create the asset first (/r/sop energy: make it once, deliver forever), then the automation, THEN film the video. Filming the CTA before the automation exists is how you end up manually DMing 200 people at midnight. Ask me how I know.
