The Beginner’s Guide to ChatGPT Ads
Updated September 2026 · By Kamran Imam
A practical guide to launching, testing, and optimizing your first campaigns inside OpenAI Ads Manager.
1. What Are ChatGPT Ads?
Advertisers with access to OpenAI Ads Manager Beta can create ads that may appear in eligible ChatGPT experiences. OpenAI says ads can appear below responses when its system expects a sponsored product or service to be relevant. Availability still varies by country, account, and the parts of ChatGPT included in the ads pilot.
The opportunity is interesting because someone may already be researching, comparing, or considering a product category when an ad appears. That does not guarantee attention or performance, but it gives advertisers a useful moment to think about.
The key mindset shift:
Traditional paid search often begins with keywords. ChatGPT ads introduce a more conversational way of thinking about user intent.
2. How ChatGPT Ads Are Structured
Campaign → Ad Group → Ad
Campaign
The overall objective, budget, dates, and targeting.
Ad Group
A collection of ads grouped around a theme or intent area. This is where you can add context hints about relevant conversation types.
Ad
The creative and message the user sees, including a title, copy, image, and landing page.
3. The Biggest Difference vs. Google Ads
Traditional search thinking
Keyword:
“best CRM software”
Conversational intent thinking
Conversation:
“I run a 20-person sales team and we’re outgrowing spreadsheets. What’s a good CRM that won’t take months to implement?”
The second example contains more than a topic. It reveals team size, current process, pain, and an implementation concern. Advertisers should think about the situations, needs, problems, and decision moments where their product may be relevant—not assume they can target an exact conversation.
4. How to Think About Context Hints
Context hints describe conversations, topics, or needs where your ad group may be useful. OpenAI says they guide matching, but they are not exact-match controls, audience rules, or a guarantee that an ad will appear for a particular word, person, topic, or situation.
Product: project-management software
Weak context:
“project management software”
Better context:
“People managing a growing team who are struggling to keep tasks, deadlines, and ownership organized across spreadsheets, Slack, and email.”
Product: meal-delivery service
Possible context:
“People discussing busy schedules, lack of time to cook, meal planning, or convenient healthy dinner options.”
Describe the situation, not just the keyword.
5. How to Launch Your First Campaign
- Go to ads.openai.com.
- Create or access your advertiser account. Complete the available verification, billing, and brand setup steps.
- Choose your campaign objective from the options available in your account. OpenAI currently documents CPM, CPC, and conversion-optimized CPC (oCPC), but availability can change.
- Set your budget, dates, and supported locations.
- Create an ad group around one clear theme or intent.
- Define the relevant customer context with descriptive context hints.
- Create your ad creative: title, description, image, and message.
- Add a focused destination URL.
- Review the campaign and submit it for review.
- After approval, confirm it is serving and monitor performance in Ads Manager Beta.
If Ads Manager Beta is not supported in your country, OpenAI says you may be able to create an account and request notification, but doing so does not grant early access.
6. How I’d Structure a First $500 Test
Illustrative framework only: this is not an official OpenAI recommendation, a minimum spend, or a guarantee that a $500 budget is available or sufficient in your account. Use only the objectives and budget controls Ads Manager Beta shows you.
Test Budget: $500
Campaign objective: CPC, or conversion-optimized CPC if it is available and your conversion measurement is ready.
3 intent themes:
- Ad Group 1 — Problem-aware users
- Ad Group 2 — Comparison / evaluation users
- Ad Group 3 — High-intent use-case users
For each ad group:
- 3 meaningfully different ad concepts
- One clear landing-page destination
- One defined user intent
- Avoid changing too many variables at once
The goal of your first campaign is not to perfectly optimize everything. It is to learn which conversations, intents, and creative angles generate meaningful engagement.
7. Example ChatGPT Ad Strategy
These are illustrative strategy examples, not predictions of delivery or results.
SaaS
User situation: “I need a CRM for a small sales team.”
Context: Small teams evaluating CRM tools, replacing spreadsheets, or looking for easier pipeline management.
Possible ad angle: Finally move your pipeline out of spreadsheets.
Ecommerce
User situation: “I need a carry-on that fits most airline limits.”
Context: Travelers comparing luggage, carry-ons, durability, or airline sizing.
Possible ad angle: Built for the overhead bin.
Local Service
User situation: “How much does it cost to replace a roof?”
Context: Homeowners researching roofing costs, contractors, repairs, or replacement options.
Possible ad angle: Get a local roofing estimate.
Consumer App
User situation: “How can I learn Spanish faster?”
Context: People looking for language-learning tools, daily practice, travel preparation, or conversational Spanish.
Possible ad angle: Practice Spanish for 10 minutes a day.
8. What to Measure
Impressions
How often the ad was shown.
Clicks
How often users clicked.
CTR
Clicks divided by impressions.
Conversions
The desired action taken after clicking, when conversion measurement is configured.
CPA
Cost per acquisition: spend divided by attributed acquisitions. This can be calculated when the required cost and conversion data is available.
Conversion rate
Percentage of clicks that result in the desired action.
Do not judge a campaign from CTR alone. The ultimate question is whether the traffic produces valuable downstream behavior. OpenAI notes that the platform does not yet have broad performance benchmarks, so interpret results in the context of your objective, creative, landing page, and measurement setup.
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating conversational ads exactly like keyword search ads
- Writing context descriptions that are too broad
- Running only one creative
- Sending all traffic to a generic homepage
- Changing multiple variables simultaneously
- Optimizing for clicks while ignoring conversion quality
- Making exaggerated or unsupported claims
- Ending a test before enough data has accumulated for a useful read
